Star Trek. I have thoughts.

I didn’t hate it like Prometheus (ugh, Damon Lindelof, why?) and certainly liked it more than that last Batman movie. I think I like Iron Man 3 more but I’m still a little torn on how I feel about that one. And as silly as it was and as much as I did not like the ending, I think Oblivion is still possibly winning this one in my brain.

Okay, so when I say I have thoughts about Star Trek Into Darkness, I don’t really know what those thoughts are yet. Let’s see.

First of all, it’s silly, the big surprise wasn’t a surprise at all, the climax was completely recycled from that other Star Trek movie we all loved that one time, and there was an absurd amount of lens flare happening. I had lots of eye roll moments.

It was basically just a big shiny whooshing ride that made me think of lots of other sci fi movies, Star Trek and otherwise. I’m torn on how I feel about this. Cause when I was watching it last night, I really did enjoy it. I mean, I love cheese in movies and silly things and I don’t mind when a movie makes me laugh at it instead of with it.

And I love these characters. I really like how they all get their little action moments, they all have their time. Simon Pegg as Scotty makes me so unbelievably happy.

Benedict Cumberbatch. Don’t even get me started. I could watch so much of him all of the time. He was the biggest thing for me in this movie I think. He’s so delightfully evil. And now I just want to go watch lots of Sherlock.

I was only kind of meh on the action scenes. After a point there was just too much. I needed more slower moments. And not just with characters. There are some really pretty space shots that are on screen so briefly my eyes barely had time to adjust before we cut away to something else again.

The contrast of the candy bright Enterprise interiors and the blackness of space was also a little much. The set design was shiny and pretty and maybe my eyes were just tired but all of that cutting from blinding bright to super dark hurt.

I don’t know if I was disappointed in the plot or not. I mean, it was pretty much a mix of rehashing old Star Trek and being stupid. But then again, I did just watch Insurrection the other day… I mean, Star Trek isn’t necessarily always known for being good. It doesn’t always have to be. Sometimes it’s okay to just be fun. Is it okay if Into Darkness is just fun? I’m not sure yet, I’ll get back to you on that one.

I enjoyed Into Darkness but I’m not sure yet how much I like it. If that makes sense. I need to watch it again I think.

As for these super nerdy crazy action movies? Most of them keep leaving me wishing they were just a little bit more, a little bit better. Sometimes they try, sometimes they don’t, but I keep feeling like they have potential to be more than what they end up being. We can have big, cool action things. But we can also have smart plots, intelligent characters, and well crafted films. Can’t we? Do I ask too much?

Of course, there’s always The Avengers to look forward too. That one I liked.

P.S.

Next time space whales?
