I’ve apparently been watching a lot of movies lately. I mean, it’s me so I don’t know how surprising this is. I did a quick count yesterday though and I’ve watched somewhere around 70 movies in the last three months. Is that a lot? I don’t know. For some reason that sounds like a lot.
Holiday movies! OMG Elf has been everywhere! I’ve watched it at least five times in the last two weeks. It just keeps happening on TV and I just keep not turning it off. It’s so silly. And so good. Still haven’t watched A Christmas Story yet though. Where has that been? Isn’t that the normal holiday movie to play over and over and over again? Has Elf usurped its place as Christmas movie king? Sad.
Have also actually made it to the theater a few times lately. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol which I liked a whole lot more than I thought I would. I think that owes a lot to the supporting actors. Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg. Need I say more? Really though, it was a lot of silly, mindless fun. I liked it. (I should also probably mention that Brad Bird is one of my absolutely favorite directors. Doesn’t hurt things.)
Hugo! I finally saw Hugo! In 3D! It’s totally worth it! It’s magical and wonderful and I maybe, possibly, cried a little at the end. But in a good way. It’s one of those movies that makes me remember why I love movies in the first place. Plus, Paris.
And Michael Fassbender happened. Oh holy hell did Michael Fassbender happen. Thank you for that. Thank you so much. A Dangerous Method, Fish Tank, Hunger. I have watched these all in like the last week. And not on purpose! Not gonna lie though, I could watch Michael Fassbender all day long. No joke. I know it’s been said a lot all over the internet that this is the year of Ryan Gosling (also, NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT EITHER) but geez Michael Fassbender! What happened this year? Jane Eyre, X-Men First Class, Shame, A Dangerous Method. The man is all over the place and please don’t let that stop.
What else have I watched? Morvern Callar, directed by Lynne Ramsay who has We Need to Talk About Kevin happening in theaters too. It’s depressing and lyrical and a little strange. I really loved it. Maybe not as much as Fish Tank, which while I may have just squeed a lot about Michael Fassbender is really made by Katie Jarvis. She’s absolutely brilliant. So Fish Tank and Morvern Callar, both two excellent films with incredibly strong female performances. They are maybe not the most make you feel good movies ever, but they’re great and I highly recommend them both.
Jeez I’m rambly today. I’m just getting stuff out of my head. There was something else…
Oh yeah! Myth of the American Sleepover! Finally watched it! And enjoyed it! It’s sweet with a taste of nostalgia.
So that’s mostly it I think. My work here is done.
